Wheeled refuse bins for whole of Joburg by July
April 7, 2004
By Lucky Sindane
THE closing phases of Pikitup's revolutionary wheeled-bin refuse collection system will see Randburg, Midrand, Norwood and Waterval making a contribution to a cleaner environment soon.
Already in use in Roodepoort and Soweto, the 240-litre wheeled refuse bins, which replace plastic refuse bags, are the brainchild of Pikitup, the City's waste management company launched in 2001.
The bin system has gradually been introduced in the City to make collection easier and cleaner and is scheduled to cover the whole of Johannesburg by the end of June. "No plastic refuse bags will be collected from 1 July," said Pikitup spokesperson Marius de Villiers.
Residents pay R5.20 a month to rent a bin, which is included in the monthly rates bill. The amount covers manufacturing and distribution costs as well as a replacement bins every five to seven years.
"It is very difficult to work with the plastic refuse bags - scavenging dogs tear them and you'll find garbage on the streets and properties. Employees won't be cut by unseen sharp objects inside the plastic bags any more," said De Villiers.
The wheeled bins resist heat, frost, harmful chemicals and dog attacks. They are designed so that they can be lifted by metal forks at the back of garbage trucks and automatically flipped up and over into the truck, emptied and returned.
"The new system won't affect the timetable for refuse collection," De Villiers added.
Any Johannesburg resident who has not received a wheeled bin by the end of April should contact Pikitup on 011 712 5200.
