BRAC received these tips from another Residential Assoc.
Know your neighbor (and their tel. numbers) - you never know when you may need them. Put aside all ill feelings, keeping up with the Jones attitude and simply get back to the age old adage of "Love thy neighbour" (and don't get into bed with him / her).
Know your neighbors maids or helpers and the regular gardeners in the area. They see many things you will never see because you are at work.
Be prepared for major inconveniences when you have a break-in. Don't lose your head.
Keep your insurance documents in an easy accessible place. It helped me yesterday to get a locksmith, get locks replaced, etc.
Keep a record of every call made to the SAPS.
Keep a spare lock or 2 in your garage, home. Never know when you need it. This will save you loads of money if you pay the locksmith for a lock.
Lock for my front door from Locksmith = R 350. My own spare lock (bought from Game about a year ago) = R 29.
Get involved with your Blockwatches & crime prevention structures. You will find people who you can relate to & who you cannot relate to. All these people will be there for you when you need a shoulder to cry on, to take care of things because you can't be at two places at the same time. You will also have access to fast track information that will possibly take you ages to get on your own.
If you are at home in the day - the hours between 8.30am to around 12pm are times when these daytime burglaries occur. Kids are at school, suburb is quiet, maids are cleaning the homes (vacuum cleaner on, music on, etc.). Be on the alert at these times. If you work from home - take a leg stretch by driving around the suburb. Activity keeps the criminals away.
Look for weak spots in your home, fencing, etc. Look at your house in totality from a criminal perspective. You will find the gaps!!!
Form a daytime Blockwatch support group or ask your security companies patrols to focus on daytime patrols as well.
Keep communicating!! What - I didn't hear that Keep communicating & Keep communicating.
Stay vigilant, stay alert, network, know your neighbor, know your suburb & don't be a soft target for criminals!!
